Bloemfontein rewards visitors who enjoy mixing history, nature and an unhurried city atmosphere. You will not find the endless attraction lists of South Africa’s biggest tourist destinations, but there is easily enough here for a rewarding couple of days.
Explore Naval Hill
Naval Hill is the place I would start. It rises above the city and offers broad views across Bloemfontein and the surrounding landscape. Franklin Game Reserve is located here, making this one of those unusual places where a city viewpoint and wildlife experience overlap.
Visit the museums
The Anglo-Boer War Museum is one of Bloemfontein’s most important historical attractions and explores the South African War of 1899–1902 and its consequences. Nearby, the Women’s Memorial commemorates women and children who died in British concentration camps during the conflict.
The National Museum is another worthwhile stop, particularly if you want a broader introduction to the region’s natural and cultural history.
Enjoy the gardens
Bloemfontein’s nickname, the City of Roses, gives you a clue that green spaces matter here. The Free State National Botanical Garden is a good escape from the city and showcases vegetation from the region.
Leave some gaps in your schedule
My suggestion is not to rush between attractions. Bloemfontein is better when you leave room for a long lunch, a walk or an unexpected stop. Combine the museums with Naval Hill and a garden visit and you will get a much better picture of the city than you would from simply passing through on the highway.
